CS312 :: Homework 3
Answer the following questions in a paragraph or two each. You’ll need to research the information
online, if you don’t know it.
This assignment asks you to gain practice in installing Windows and Linux, answer some questions about
standard folder usage practice, then install a program on Linux.
Questions
1. In VirtualBox, create a new VM and install Windows 10 on it (don’t use our reference VM).
a. During the installation process, which you’ll have to explore and figure out for yourself
(it’s pretty easy), you’ll be asked to create an account. I recommend you skip that
portion and set up a local account for now, but you can create an account that uses your
Microsoft account if you like.
b. When you have this VM installed, log in, and fire up a terminal by running cmd.exe.
c. Type “systeminfo” at the prompt.
d. Take a screenshot of this window, attaching it to your submission of this homework. The
screenshot should show everything from the “systeminfo” command itself all the way
through the Original Install Date. (10 points)
2. In VirtualBox, create a new VM and install CentOS7 on it (don’t use our reference VM) using the
instructions given in the “2W-VMs” lecture to create a CLI-only VM. Use the CentOS installation
.ISO provided on our website.
a. When you have the system up and running, run this command:
$ rpm -qi basesystem
b. Take a screenshot of this window, attaching it to your submission of this homework. The
screenshot should show the entire command – if the entire command doesn’t fit, then it
should show everything from the command itself all the way through the Build Host. (10
points)
3. List the folder path where all user directories are stored in CentOS7, Windows 10, and macOS
High Sierra (you can use our three reference VMs to get these paths, for example). (6 points: 2
for each)
4. What does the name of the Linux folder /usr mean? Is USR an abbreviation for something? (2
points)
5. Explain, in your own words, the difference between the Linux directories /bin, /usr/bin, /sbin,
and /usr/sbin. Name a common program located in each. (6 points)
6. On either the reference CentOS VM, or the one you created above, install the Lynx CLI web
browser. Using it, browse to www.slashdot.org, then take a screenshot of some part of that
page and attach it with your submission. (6 points)
